The strength of your prescription is determined by the Sphere value.

If you are short-sighted, this value will be negative. If you are long-sighted it will be a positive value.

You may see a negative value written on your prescription by a dash above the number.

Occasionally you will see the value written without a decimal point (e.g. +1.75 might be written as +175), but it means the same thing.

The values for the left and the right eye will either both be negative or both be positive.

Cylinder (CYL)

If your CYL value is greater that 4.00 or less than -4.00, please email with your prescription for a quotation.

If an eye is not a perfect sphere, it is said to have an astigmatism. The level of correction for an astigmatism is determined by the cylinder (CYL) value on your prescription.

It may be that you have a correction value for one eye but not the other. If your prescription shows DS this means there is no correction so simply leave this box blank.

Negative values are often written with the dash above the number and occasionally opticians will leave out the decimal point (e.g. +1.75 is written as +175), but it means the same.

Axis

Together with the CYL value, the axis value is used to correct an astigmatism, where an eye is not a perfect sphere. If this is blank on your prescription (or the value is written as DS meaning no correction required), leave this box blank.

Cylinder and Axis values are used together, so if you have a value in CYL you should have a value for Axis.

You may well have a reading for one eye and not the other.

Addition (ADD)

Sometimes the optician will write on your prescription a value to convert a general use prescription into a reading prescription. This will be called the addition or ADD. It may be written just once or once for each eye. We will use this value if you are ordering reading glasses.

Pupillary distance

Pupillary Distance (PD) or interpupillary distance (IPD) is the distance between the centres of the pupils in each eye.

Many prescriptions given by high street opticians do not include a PD measurement, so we can make your glasses using an average pupillary distance (62mm for women, 65mm for men) that will suit most people.

If you know that you have a particularly strong prescription, it may be better to revisit your optician and ask for your pupillary distance to be measured, although not all opticians will oblige.

Alternatively, you could ask a friend to measure it for you simply by using a non-permanent marker and your current glasses. Looking straight ahead, get your friend to put a small dot on the front of the lens at the centre of your left and and your right pupil. Then simply use a ruler to measure (in mm) the distance between the dots. It really is that straightforward!
