Essilor's Vision Test application has achieved over a million downloads and has become the number 1 most downloaded medical app on iTunes since its launch in July, 2010, leading the company to release a second generation version.

Like the original, the new application was created with the objective of driving eye test footfall into independent Varilux consultant opticians and is now available on mobile phones using Google's Android operating system as well as Apple's iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices.

Insurer warns drivers to have vision check-up

A survey of 1,200 online customers by car insurance firm Swinton revealed that 34 per cent had not had an eye test in over four years.

The company, which is warning motorists to ensure they have regular eye tests, advised that failure to do so was breaking the law and could lead to motorists having their licences revoked. The survey revealed that 26 per cent had not visited an optician for four to six years, 14 per cent between six and eight years, 10 per cent between eight and 10 years and 6 per cent hadn't been for over 10 years.

Kate Moss has added Vogue Eyewear to her list of campaigns. The model, who replaces Gisele, will star in the label's spring/summer 2011 adverts.

Shot by Mario Testino in London's Syon Park (the set of Gosford Park and Emma), the new campaign will be revealed in this spring.

According to WWD, the new collection will feature a selection of styles named Kate's Favourites - a selection of four designs chosen specially by the model herself.

Silmo trend review A/W 2010

So, 1010 Direct went to the Optical trade show "Silmo" in the magical city of Paris. We had an amazing time talking to designers, looking at the upcoming trends and meeting suppliers to get our customers the most fashionable styles and even more affordable prices.

We were really excited to see the trends that 1010 had already been backing are also being promoted by the top optical designers and 1010 already have a massive selection of these available.

Crystal Frames

A noticeable style which brightens up any face are the clear crystal frames.

A few brands such as Guess by Marciano have been sporting them for a few months, but now they are available in every brand we have them in Police and D&G.

The style has developed and all over the optical fashion world are now coloured crystal frames.

Two toned Crystal

This is everywhere. Our frames here DG-ODD1189-1676are for a female wearer, but at silmo there were plenty of acetate frame styles with the lower half of the frame in clear acetate.

This gave the impression of a semi rimless pair but not. Why? A wearer with a high prescription would be unable to wear semi rimless due to the thickness of the outside of the lense, with these they can give the impression of the semi rimless with the clearer face, with all the benefits of modish optical style.

The High Bridge

1010 have been screaming that this will be the main trend for A/W 2010 and we couldn't be more right!

Think Frank Butcher being made cool by rappers and X factor contestants.

The meaning high bridge is that the top of the frames sits high above the bridge of the nose. The retro styling is due to the dramatic curve from the outer of the frame back to the high bridge over the nose.

The Club Master-esque

After talking with designers this is the only nick name we could come up with that we felt summed up what we were trying to explain.

The frames have a thick solid acetate top, but like the Club Master the under ridge have a fine metal rim.

They look subtle and very funky at the same time. We have some brighter options in Vision by Conran , a delicate pair by D&G and the classic Club master in the Wayfarer style by Police.

High Bridge Glasses for Autumn/Winter 2010

In the run up to London's A/W Fashion Week 2010, here at 1010 we grow every day with excitment for our featured designer Manish Arora. Reknowned for swimming against the tide of copy cat commercialism and blandness, his fashion collectons as well as his eyewear collections have the industry on tenderhooks in anticipation of his next showing.

Indian born Fashion designer manish is based in New Delhi. He began his eponymous "Manish Arora" label back in 1997 in India becoming known for a rich palette of psychedelic colors and kitsch motifs, in garments that combine traditional Indian crafts like embroidery, appliqué and beading with Western silhouettes.

Three years later in 2000, Manish Arora represented India at the Hong Kong Fashion Week and participated at the first ever India Fashion Week held in New Delhi receiving more rave reviews as his fashion career accelerated.

The brilliant Manish Arora launched his second label, "Fish Fry", and featured this Prêt a Porter inspirational collection in six leading cities in India and was stocked at Lord & Taylor, New York. During 2002 Manish opened his first flagship store, Manish Arora Fish Fry, in New Delhi and in 2003 opened his second flagship store in the commercial capital of India, Mumbai.

In 2010 1010 Direct launched their website with Manish Arora's optical range at the forefront of the website. The vibrant appearance of the glasses designs summed up the mood of the optical fashion world. A geek Chic revival began with wearers becoming bolder and using glasses as an accessory instead of a necessity. Fashion frames were the way forward and Manish Arora was the Prêt a Porter designer of those frames.

Issuu is a free web site where people and publishers can publish documents in a formatted design so that other people and publishers can view them.

The web site is full of interesting documents from fashion magazines to DIY manuals. There are reviews, short stories and catalogues and 1010 Direct have had a great time exploring the site. The whole site is really fresh and exciting with writers, bloggers, marketers and students making the most of it.

Twilight saga influences gothic fashion revival!

With the long awaited third part of the Twilight saga opening this week, the gothic trend has quickly translated into the fashion glasses world. My favourite GU-1664-PURPLE have a very high street friendly gothic essence to them. Slim, subtle colouring and unique patterns on the arm, make these a very chic part of the guess collection.

With these, GU-1666-BLKFRT, the unique stencil design on the arm combine gothic styling with this seasons bold white trends , a definite fusion piece.

A more youthful gothic item is the SK-3002-BLKRD in the colours more associated with current gothic trends. These bold spectacles would be an idolised piece to any glasses collector.

These by Manish Arora MNO-S02-204 are again a more youthful look at the gothic or EMO trends, but a bit more sweet with the glitter and the contemporary cut out front.

These are just a few of our favourite at 1010direct. This SST-190 is this seasons must have and are currently on special offer.

New to the site is Givenchy Sunglasses. One of the most chic and sophisticated pairs from the collection is SGV702G-0700. They really demonstrate the iconic French elegance of the brand. A more unique but wearable pair are the SGV688-06UP which are in an interesting two tone of colour and again very elegant. A more modern pair from the Givenchy Sunglass collection is SGV659-06SF the blue tint through the lenses complements the subtle navy logo on the arm.

We have a huge selection of Police Sunglasses which are looking very vintage 80's, but the clear favourites are the POLS-S8425N-627P. This classic style is masculine and very much sought after. We have a selection very modern wrap around shades within the Police frames. These S8363-0K01 are a bold pair with two tones of burned orange and fiery tortoise shell. They are wearable for both boys and girls and very sexy.

Our newest Sunglasses collection is by Guess. One of the most interesting pairs has to be the GU6521-PUR45 which are boldly purple. The guess collection is very vintage chic, but these have a much more bohemian style to them.

Transitions or Tinted lenses?

All our optical frames are able to have tinted lenses and we have a range of coloured tints. We also have Transitions lenses so which ever frame you choose can be used for indoor or outdoor use. If you want to get really creative with the frames and lenses then any frames from the Geek Chic category would look amazing with a coloured tint, especially the Manish Arora frames. Also putting a brown or grey tint into any from the Wayfarer section will leave you with some very fashionable prescription sunglasses. My personal favourite is going to be the Guess by Marciano with a UV400 green tint, very special.

I love this time of year, loads of weddings to dress up for! A very good friend of mine had decided that she, as the bride, wanted to wear glasses on her wedding day. This decision seemed more sensible as she, obviously, had to be able to see her husband and contacts were out of the question. Your wedding day is a day where you simply can't be constantly in the bathroom, with your finger in your eyes, making your mascara run!

I realised that loads of women are unaware of the joys of "Occasion Glasses". Glasses are another wonderful accessory to play with when complimenting and completing an outfit. In the instance of considering your bridal glasses, they need to coordinate with your other accessories and harmonize with your gown.

Things that should be considered are the materials the frames are made from. Acetate can be in any colour, so a pearl design could work amazingly with pearl accessories. If you love modern frames my favourites are Tim Dilsen slimline semi rimless in brown. These would suit darker hair and complement a dress in Ivory or Gold. Semi Rimless opens up the face, creating less shadow.

Another idea in the Modern frames are these X Eyes in Purple the design on the arms is gorgeous. These would again suit a darker complexion for them to be subtle. Every time I see these I think that if you had the brides maids in Lilac and lilac flowers, they would coordinate in a really clever way.

If you have any silver amongst your wedding day accessories theBerkeley in Chrome are really charming. Very understated, but with a very pretty diamond facing forward from the arm. These would accompany only colour of gown and suit medium to light complexions.

Tim Dilsen frames are effortless with subtle uncomplicated details. In gold, so would go with all gold based accessories and complement any colour of gown.

This delicate pair is by Sun Optic and are semi rimless which allows more light onto the face. The tortoises shell arms are made more interesting due to the circular diamond studded motif between the arm and the frame, simply beautiful.

Lastly my personal favourite, Tom Dilsen in a gold frame bordered with diamonds with more studded onto the arms, facing forward, complementing the semi transparent tortoise shell arms. These are very classic and timeless, would look amazing with any colour gown.
